Action Anime Choice:
This was actually a hard choice to make as I frequently watch series that are considered to be 'action' anime. For this genre, I made the choice of Devil May Cry. It would be an injustice though to leave the vast action genre containing other good anime unmentioned, so in following postings, I will cover these as well.
The
series is only 12 episodes long. For a traditional anime this is rather short as normal anime length tends to be around 24 episodes. The Devil_May_Cry game was originally
produced in Japan and developed by Capcom, with the intention of being a sequel
to the Resident_Evil franchise. Both the
game and the anime are part of the nontraditional horror genre. To demonstrate how often the anime and the game were marketed, the DMC anime trailer and release date were both announced at the Tokyo game show in 2006.
If you are a fan of the DMC games, you will most likely enjoy enjoy the anime as long as you realize the anime is a standalone series. However, the only real problem with the anime is that it is attached to such a big game franchise. This could have most of the DMC game fans saying “oh Dante
would never be like that”. Other than the characters and their mannerisms remaining the same in the anime, there is little linkage to the games. With the exception of the last three episodes where there is significant plot advancement, the previous nine are depicted as singular stories. Regardless, the anime is quite enthralling.
To answer the question as to why I initially watched and consequently thoroughly enjoyed the anime, I had played the games extensively and was drawn to their over-the-top hack and slash interaction. The anime's portrayal of Dante was exactly like that of the game where he has an unstoppable bad-ass demeanor. In spite of the continuous violent bloodshed, Dante reveals his more human qualities through small acts of kindness, and the picture memorial of his mother. Additionally, another reason I first found the DMC anime appealing was the fact it was created by the same animation team responsible for producing Deathnote. Even though the series is a bit over-the-top on occasion, the story-line is quite engaging. Devil May Cry is an anime where after watching the first episode, you will assuredly be hooked for the remainder, and the series ends in such a way that makes you crave more.
